The Merino is a breed of fine-wool sheep originating in Spain; it was known as early as the 12th century. The South African Mutton Merino was developed from a small nucleus of German Mutton Merino sheep in South Africa and is considered a dual-purpose breed. Merino sheep are generally heavy for their size, and some sheep farmers raise them for mutton as well as wool. Some Merino sheep have short nubs for horns that aren't visible, while others have long, curling horns. Air dry merino wool for increased longevity and softness. Both rams and ewes are polled. We only support sustainable sheep farming practices. It was particularly well adapted to semiarid climates and to nomadic pasturing. Merino sheep are generally very fertile compared to other types of sheep, and they often give birth to twins or even quadruplets.
